This last Saturday my tennis team competed in a tournament and fundraiser to benefit Children’s Hospital and their congenital heart disease research program. There were 14 teams and over 100 participants. I was a captain for one of the fourteen teams. The event was held in Highlands Ranch, CO at the Redstone Tennis Complex. My team was made up of the following individuals: Dave Pollack, Dan Magill, Wendy Fryer, Cynthia Rentz, Mark Dennis, Andrea Carey, Mike Donnelly, and Hank Grey.
We were able to rack up the most games won in our division thanks to the excellent play of my teammates. The weather was great and the attendees were able to raise$15,000 and a cumulative total of $190,000 for the years they have been doing this event. The event was started in 2007 after a life changing experience for Chad & Leslie Schott and their daughter Libby (now 17) who was born with a heart defect. Libby had a second heart surgery in 2011 that went well but afterwards Libby went into cardiac arrest for unknown reasons and the heroics of doctors, nurses, in conjunction with the ECMO machine saved her life.
As a result of Libby’s life saving experience, 100% of the money raised will support of the ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) program at Children’s. To learn more about this event check out playforaheart.com
